(and going offline for a short while) Hi there, Info-Mac is moving! That is the good news. Unfortunately, we have to do this before we are completely ready. In order to concentrate on the move we are going to shut down public access for two weeks starting this Wednesday (12-Mar-97). During this brief hiatus, we will not accept uploads or messages for the digest. Please don't send us anything until you see an announcement about the completion of the move. You'll see a new digest with any changes we in our mail addresses at that time. We're sorry about the interuption in service! Don't worry - we have the machine and it is already up - we just have to move our scripts and procedures onto it. It will be hectic, but please bear with us while we move. Thanks for your patience! The Info-Mac Moderators p.s. what does this mean for you: no digests for a while. Sorry. As far as getting at the mirrors, well, they will still be up, just not updating for a while. Where you subscribe to the digest or download (from a mirror) will not change. There will be new email addresses, but you won't be forced to use them till the end of May. Tomorrow we will send out the last batch of digests (including those 200 uploads)... I hope this will keep you happy for a short while... Our backlog is less than 200 megs... that is the smallest it has been in a long while! It is harder to beat the dragon than it is to win at conventional solitaire, and offers the strategic solitaire player more scope than the standard varieties of patience. However, the rules are straightforward enough that children can play it as well. Version 2.0 has been completely redesigned for color macintoshes with 13" or larger monitors. This means, there are slick new graphics and cards large enough that you won't go blind by playing. This game is fun, visually and aurally interesting (for you kids out there, that means cool graphics and sounds:), very addictive, and can be very frusterating (that dragon's got some attitude problems). Definitely a game for the die-hard patience player or just those who like to keep one or two well-designed card games around. All the instructions and ordering/registration material are enclosed in a readme file, but all the most relevant information (including rules etc.) can be found under the apple menu in the game itself. The game took a good deal of time to develop and I am asking for a shareware registration fee of US $10 to (at least, partly) compensate me for my time and effort. If you can't afford the fee, enjoy the game anyway. CD-ROM Publishers, however, must take note of GRAPHICAindustria's new policies (see enclosed ReadMe file) with respect to them. Finally, the game is now being supported by GRAPHICAindustria, a brand new, Macintosh shareware company trying to get on thier feet. They are using 1997 to test whether the Mac market is a viable game market. For more info on them and upcoming games, take a look at thier nifty homepage: http://www.peak.sfu.ca/gi Check there for updates and offers on this and other soon-to-be-released Macintosh shareware games. SoundApp is the premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion and playback routines can be found in the internal "About SoundApp..." documentation. SoundApp 2.2.3 fixed a few problems with 2.2.2: * SoundApp no longer gets confused if the Controls Palette is closed while playing a file from a Play List, * Made another attempt to allow SoundApp to work without a PowerPC-native AppleScript, * Corrected two AppleScript dictionary problems (one which prevented conversion to a specific format type and another which prevented saving a Play List to a specified file), * If SoundApp is in the midst of playing some sounds and a folder is dropped onto SoundApp, the sound files contained therein will now be added to the playback queue, * Cleaned up internal memory management and fixed some issues with drag and drop in Play Lists, * Significantly sped up the sorting of Play Lists. SoundApp requires the following: * At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!), * System 7.0 or greater, and * Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple, 3.2 is part of System 7.5.3 or greater and 3.2 is part of QuickTime 2.5). In addition, the following optional items are recommended: * QuickTime 2.0 or greater for QuickTime support (2.5 preferred), * The Drag Manager for drag and drop use in the Play Lists (part of System 7.5 and later), * A PowerPC-based Macintosh for MPEG support and better performance. Please note that I have no plans to support System 6.0.x, 68000-based Macs, MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager. The message you see after starting up about having GX fonts on a non-GX system is actually a message coming from Adobe's Type Manager. When you install ATM or Acrobat the installer determines whether or not GX is installed and active. If it is, it places the substitution fonts for ATM in one suitcase. These are PostScript Type 1 fonts which normally come as a font file (the PostScript description of the font) and a suitcase file where the bitmap fonts are stored. Now, when you installed GX, the GX installer did the same with your PostScript fonts that where already on your system and created a backup folder with the original files. This is the "*Archived Type 1 Fonts" folder. If you don't want to use GX anymore, remove it from your system, re-install ATM and/or Acrobat, and finally drag all the fonts from the "*Archived Type 1 Fonts" folder to the regular fonts folder and you're all set. The "Fonts (Disabled), Archived TT Fonts" have nothing to do with GX installation or ATM/Acrobat installation, but rather with a font management utillity. If these folders contain GX-ified Type 1 fonts of which you don't have a back-up, you have lost them. As for TrueType fonts "classic" QuickDraw is happy with GX TT fonts, so you will be able to use Hoefler and Skia, but you will not be able to use the special GX features of those fonts.
