Can you recommend a good address book? I'm using the shareware "AddressBook", but it has problems, mainly, (1) you can't select an entry easily by typing part of the name, but have to go to section "A" ... "Z"; (2) the display of an address record is modal, so you can't cut & paste freely. 1. Can you recommend a good calendar? I'm using WP calendar, but I hate it, because if you delete something inadvertently there's no way to undo the delete. Rollo Silver / Amygdala | e-mail: rollo@artvark.com 216M N. Lately, I have downloaded some .avi's that I can not play. When I use the AVI->QT utility, I get an error message that the file was create with unknown compression methods. I have MacsBug 6.5.3 installed on my PowerMac 8200/120 because I have been given to understand that it effects a gentler restart after a crash than other methods - otherwise I have little understanding of what it does or how it does it. I have, however, noted various crashes in which the attempt to produce a log of the event by typing on the command line does not create the usual log display but - as in the most recent example - gives a message of the following type (absolute accuracy of the transcript not guaranteed): PPC access exception at 0028DD4 GetOTInstallInfo+082AC PPC Illegal instruction at FFCI0000 -VSyncWait+00D84 ***MacsBug caused the exception *** Neither the RS or RB commands works so that I have to resort to a hot boot to get my machine running again. What (in idiot terms, if possible) does all this mean? More specifically is it saying that there is a bug in MacsBug 6.5.3 itself or that it has become damaged in some way? Okay...so I tried Intel's web page, and no luck. I am looking for a driver that will support the Intel Pro100B PCI ethernet card in a Macintosh. Does anyone know of anything that exists, or another driver that could be made to work? I tried Asante, Dayna Blue Streak and Apple drivers...none work. Thanks in advance. Tim Biddle tkbiddle@indy.navy.mil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 May 97 14:19:44 BST From: Ian.Goldby@powertech.co.uk Subject: Good C++ books? I've read "Learn C++ with CodeWarrior", "Learn C++ on the Mac" and even the Microsoft Visual C++ language tutorial. But I still can't program in C++. I'm looking for some way of getting lots of practise. None of these books have any good exercises in them. The C++ with CodeWarrior book has exercises, but they all concentrate on making modifications to existing programs, and many of the programs are very long requiring more time to understand what's already there than to make the modifications suggested. I'm looking for a series of exercises to guide me through to becoming proficient in the language. It will need to start with something like "Write a program to do such and such. You will need classes for X, Y, and Z. These classes should have member functions to do this, that and the other", and then progress to giving less and less specific guidance about how to accomplish the tasks set. The exercises should also be reasonably short, and not build on stuff written in previous exercises too much. (i.e. a series where you finally end up with one monolithic application is definitely not what I am looking for.) So, can you recommend anything, either internet resources or a book to help with this? If it is a book, it would be helpful if it contained a concise reference to C++ as well as the exercises (but not a learn programming from scratch book as I am already familiar with non-object oriented programming). (If such a thing doesn't exist, perhaps one of you might decide to fill the gap in the market?) Many thanks. Lipman" Subject: MS IE 3.01 on 7.6.1 on a IIci DayStar Turbo 040 - Quits Immediately Hello Everyone, This note with minor changes has been sent to Microsoft, but I am not really expecting a reply :-(. I have a IIci with a DayStar Turbo 040. This machine would not run 7.6 according to Apple's documentation because of the 040 accelerator and its use of cache, and I figured I was at the end of the line for this machine. But Apple fixed the conflict in 7.6.1. I followed Apple's directions and removed the accelerator card, upgraded to 7.6, upgraded to 7.6.1, and reinstalled the acclerator. Everything works fine. I have a nice stable system. In the following paragraphs I talk about the testing I did with IE 3.01 beta. Please note that I subsequently did most of these tests on the official IE 3.01 release. See the comments specific to the official release at the end. A couple of weeks ago I installed the Internet Explorer 3.01 beta. I was just so tired of crashing Netscape 3.01. Why I have even seen Netscape 3.01 abort on my Unix WorkStation (SGI Irix 5.3), and once - I swear this is true - I saw the Unix workstation auto-restart. I have NEVER seen that before ... but I digress. I found that IE 3.01 beta would come up using no home page or a local file as a home page, but any attempt at referencing a page on the Network would result in the application quitting. I backed off to 7.5.5 and IE 3.01 beta worked fine. Then I took the DayStar accelerator out and ran 7.6.1 and IE 3.01 beta worked fine. It was still possible that this was a problem in the new CFM-68K Runtime Enabler, so I next downloaded Open Doc 1.1.2 and CyberDog 2.0 (because I knew CyberDog needed the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler as well). CyberDog runs fine. I actually think it is a pretty nice product. It has more than a few rough edges though ... but I digress. Now I know full well that even though CyberDog runs OK, CFM 68K could still be the source of the problem with IE 3.01 beta, but at this point it seems a little more likely that the problem is with IE itself. I could have tried AOL 3.0 (it uses CFM 68K too) to see if it would run OK, but I didn't. I just got the official release of IE 3.01 and it works on 7.5.5, but not on 7.6.1. I have not bothered to take out the acclerator card to verify that it works without it. I'm virtually certain that it will. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anyone else out there experiencing a similar problem? We are using a fileserver (PC) with Novell Netware (think its 4.0 not 4.11). I have just upgraded to Mac OS 7.6.1 with Opentransport 1.1.2. Since i have upgraded, I can no longer write to the file server. I can read from it but when i write to it i get an error message "The Item XXX can not be copyied because the file could not be found". When i reloaded 7.5 (without OT) i can read and write to the server with no problem. I have called Apple's 800-SOS-APPL, but they could not help me. Has anyone had this problem?
