>I have an old SE/30 lying around as well as a 68LC040 chip that I took out

No. The CPU daughtercard from the PowerBook 500 series is a proprietary
module which holds the CPU, ROM and a large ASIC which I believe is
implicated in address decoding and peripheral interfacing. It is
absolutely proprietary to the PB500 and since the CPU is in an MQUAD
pack, you can't even remove the chip to use elsewhere. If you want to
find a use for that card, you may be able to sell it to a PB520 user
anxious for a little more speed. You can also overclock the card to
40/80MHz, fwiw.
I believe Daystar made a 68lc040 accelerator for the SE/30 but it will be
hard to come by these days.
The SE/30 in this day and age is probably best employed as a file or web
server unless you have a specific application in mind which will fit a
512x384 1-bit display. You can stack the machine up with positively
hordes of 30-pin RAM, put a PDS Ethernet card in it, tuck it under your
desk and provided you don't kick out the power cable, it will keep
chugging along for years.

This configuration, as you've discovered (g) is not supported. Recovery
is simple and should not cause loss of data. There are a couple of routes
you could go down, and this is not the simplest, but it is the most
certain (assuming you have System 7.5, if you don't, then I'm not sure
how you got into this situation in the first place):
* Remove or disable the accelerator.
* Boot off 7.5 Install Me First.
* Install System 7.5 "for any Macintosh".
* Reinstall the accelerator and any required extensions.
* Upgrade to 7.5.3 then 7.5.5.
>I'll certainly think twice before I try OS 8 on my NuPowr upgraded PB 500!
>(which does run with 7.61)
The NuPowr cards for PB500 series use the same ROMs as the Apple PowerPC
upgrade and to all intents and purposes they are identical to the Apple
card. OS8 will work very well indeed on a PPC-upgraded 500 series,
whether it is the Apple card or a NuPowr. However, you will not be able
to boot directly off the OS8.0 CD-ROM on a PPC-upgraded PowerBook 500
series machine (leastways, I have never managed it on units with the
Apple card). You will need to boot off the hard drive.

The JDK for MacOS from Sun, now no longer supported it seems, should
still be available from , and it is free. At
the last I checked, it appeared that Sun is no longer developing the Mac
JDK; they seem to have passed the reins to Apple. Unfortunately as you've
probably noticed, the MRJ SDK does not include a compiler.
I'm not sure how large the Sun JDK is (I don't have it installed right
now), but I might be able to email it to you if you can't find it.
There are several commercial options, of which I have tried CodeWarrior's
Java support (Metrowerks also sell, or used to sell, a special cut-down
version of CodeWarrior, "Discover Java Programming on the Macintosh",
which had ONLY the CW IDE and the Java compiler), Symantec Cafe, and
Symantec Visual Cafe.
If you are developing something that's mostly user interface with not
much meat behind it, then Visual Cafe is worth a look. If you are
developing something which has lots of complex code behind the scenes,
and not much user interface, then Cafe (which is the only one of those
tools above I actually use on a regular basis) is worth a look. I find it
irksome to develop complex algorithms in visual languages, and equally
irksome to develop complex user interfaces in traditional editor-compiler
IDEs.

This appears to be a problem in GraphicConverter, though exactly what it
is, I can't say. If you switch configurations with Location Manager while
GraphicConverter is open, you will *always* get this message, but it
appears to be completely harmless. It's not actually a MacOS error - it's
an error dialog in GraphicConverter itself.

1.07b? AFAIK the latest version of Virtual PC is 1.0.1. If you have the
DOS version of VPC, you need to install the integration utilities which
come with VPC so DOS can access your CD-ROM drive. This will create a
directory in your virtual C drive, default name C:\CNTX, which contains,
among other things, CDROM.SYS. It will also add a line like this to your
CONFIG.SYS:
device=c:\cntx\cdrom.sys /d:idecd001
and a line like this to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
mscdex /d:idecd001
Once you have installed Win95, you should go to
and download the latest version of the Win95
integration drivers, which will significantly improve mouse smoothness
and video speed. It's quite a large download.

Subject: (Q) Floppy drive problem
I have the strangest problem with my floppy drive. I have a Power Mac 7500
running OS 8.0. Sometimes the floppy drive reads an inserted disk just fine
and sometimes, when the same disk is inserted, the system says the disk is
unreadable or the diskette icon does not appear on the desktop or the
system freezes after the icon appears. For one application I received four
800 K disks to do the installation. All but one of these disks are read
fine each time they are inserted into the floppy drive. The one disk
freezes the system upon insertion 3 times out of 4 (note: but not always).
On the other hand, this same disk can be read fine in another Mac.
The Apple tech replaced the floppy drive with an Apple replacement unit and
also the floppy drive ribbon cable. The problems persist. He ran logic
board diagnostics and no problems showed up.
In the absence of knowing specifically why the problems I've described
could occur, he feels that I should replace my mother board because the
only thing he couldn't replace was the floppy disk controller. This is
quite costly!!!
Has anyone encountered similar problems? Were the causes of the problems
ever clearly isolated? If I really need to use the floppy drive, is my only
course of action to replace, in effect, the whole computer because the
flakiness of the floppy drive cannot be directly repaired?
Thanks for all inputs!

AppleEvent's are high level messages used by AE-aware programs to
communicate with each other and the system. AppleScript for example is a
scripting interface for sending AppleEvents.
i'm not a programmer, but perhaps you have a background app / macro
running? an applescript app maybe? you might check your startup items
folder.
it would seem that _something_ is sending an AppleEvent "commandName" to
"reference" (target app). apparently, the target app is being located and
_something_ is sending a message to it, but the target app doesn't
understand, causing the AE Manager to generate the error.
or it could be that either of your programs are causing an error somehow or
not finding the resources they need... i use CW4 alot and never get that
particular error, but i do get it when testing / debugging an AppleScript
occasionally.
make sure that applescript and associated files are installed properly.
good luck with it :)

Word 5.1a can import (and scale) Encapsulated Postscript
Files (eps).
There is a utility PS2EPS+ in the archives
(/info-mac/gst/grf/ps-to-eps-plus-10.hqx) that is
supposed to be able to convert single-page postcript
files into .eps files (I haven't tried it).
If this does not work, you should ask your correspondent

Subject: AOL 3.01 help
Hi all,
A colleague has run into a slight problem upon upgrading from AOL 2.7 to
3.0. With 2.7, he could use the browser just fine, since it used the AOL
client to get through to the Net. With AOL 3.0, however, they switched it
so that you need to be using AOL Link in order to get the brower to access
anything. Since the upgrade, however, he hasn't gotten it to work. I tried
to do it unsuccessfully. I trashed MacTCP (and Prep), TCPack for AOL, AOL
Link, the AOL 3.0 folder & reinstalled them from the AOL 3.01 installer. I
started AOL & selected prefs under the member menu. I clicked on AOL Link &
made sure that the checkbox was on to always use AOL Link, & clicked the
configure button, which is *supposed* to do everything necessary to
activate AOL Link. I rebooted & made sure that AOL Link was the selected
option in MacTCP. When I clicked on more=8A, I saw that all DNS info was
blank, it was set to get address from server & I forget the subnet mask
part, but it was pretty plain vanilla (didn't seemed configged for
anything). Personally, I've always used AOL in the other direction (bring
your own access, i.e. access it via a TCP connection to my ISP). I was
hoping that the AOL link actually made MacTCP bypass its normal stuff &
force it to "ask" AOL's client for all info it needs. I tried using a known
IP address, to be sure that it wasn't the missing DNS info. Can anyone who
uses AOL to access the Net let me know how AOL configured their MacTCP?
The stats are:
Mac PPC 5200, plenty of RAM, but VM turned on (wife does graphics work I
think), AOL for PPC 3.01, MacTCP 2.0.6, MacOS 7.5.3 (I know, he should
upgrade to 7.5.5)
Any help is greatly appreciated.

A week and a half later nothing! So i decided to call them back, and,

Remove the Daystar card. The system may boot now. If not, boot with an
old [7.0? 7.1?] Disk Tools floppy; maybe the one that came with the IIsi,
if you still have it. This will allow you to delete the existing System

You can then install a new copy of 7.5.5 and replcae the DayStar card and

Well, I'm running a IIci with a daystar PPC upgrade and 7.6 upgraded to
7.6.1, and It works perfectly. Aside from a few minor things (I can't run
MkLinux on an upgrade card. wahhhhh) I have had few problems.
I can pull the card out and boot back to the 25MHz 68030 on board, so
maybe you can try the same thing? If you can boot the old processor, then
deinstall, go for it.
I can also swap between card and motherboard with the control panel, but
you can't since you can't boot. Ooops.
Is it doing the sad mac, or giving an error, or what?
Personally, I want to test run os8 on my machine before I purchase it,
since no one around here accepts a package after you return it. Sad part:
I don't know that it's legal. Is it?

I have a IIci with the Daystar Turbo 040, and the official
instructions from Apple (someplace in the 7.6.1 readme files) stated
that 7.6.1 supported this configuration whereas 7.6 had not. The way
to get from 7.5.x to 7.6.1 was to:
1. remove the accelerator card (now you have a supported 68030 with 24
bit clean ROM),
2. update to 7.6
3. immediately update to 7.6.1
4. reinstall the accelerator card.
An Apple caveat was DO NOT turn on virtual memory.
I have been rock stable on 7.6.1 since it became available. It has
been far better than 7.5.x, though 7.5.5 was pretty solid too.
So, does anyone in this knowledgeable community know whether the same
procedure will work for Charlie with his Daystar 100MHz PPC card?
As I read this over, it occurs to me that this should not work without
some further magic. I'm guessing that the resulting system was tailored
by the 7.6 and 7.6.1 installer scripts for a 68030 based machine. It
was good enough for the 68040 accelerated system, which is at least
the same processor family :-), but it seems highly unlikely that it
would be good enough for a Power PC (601/100?) based system :-(.
Personally, I'm guessing that the resulting system will need more
tweaks.

in the first quarter of 1998. It's a difficult decision for us, one we
arrived at only after a lengthy and thorough analysis of recent trends.
We know this will come as a great disappointment to some MATLAB users
and we will do our best to minimize the impact.
We are doing this because our Mac installations have declined steadily
in the past few years in both our industry and educational sectors
(even while MATLAB installations overall have shown robust growth) to
a point that it is no longer justifiable to support the platform.
We regret the disruption our decision may cause some of you, but we
feel it is the best way to focus our development efforts looking
forward. We are fortunate to have skilled engineers on our Mac team
and that their talents will go toward enhancing our products in new
ways that will benefit the entire MATLAB community.
What This Means to MATLAB Users on the Mac:
1) We'll continue to provide technical support to Mac users.
2) You'll receive MATLAB 5.2 automatically if your current MATLAB
version and associated toolboxes are at release 5.0 or 5.1
3) MATLAB 5.2 on the Mac will be an industrial-strength release and
provide an up-to-date solution on the Mac well into the next year.
4) We will continue to offer 5.2 for the Mac as long as there is
sufficient demand for it.
5) You may transfer your Macintosh product(s) to PC Windows FREE of
charge if your product(s) is at the current version.
6) Full credit towards the purchase of a workstation license. If your
Macintosh product(s) is at the current version, you can use the
Macintosh current price as a down payment on a Workstation and
receive 12 months of maintenance.
NOTE: This product transfer policy for the Macintosh will be valid
until 11/1/98
If you are interested in transferring your license to a different
platform, please contact Customer Service directly at 508-647-7000
ext. 3 or just reply to this email.
Sincerely,
The MathWorks

Reading this, I have no possibility to judge whether the product could

since I am nut downloading every single upload (I don't have unlimited

Motorola StarMaxes give this error constantly. After checking with
Motorola, they said I should avoid using programs that gave the error
message. I've done some investigatin' of my own, and part of the reason
seems to lie in buggy ATA driver on the ROM (which makes Apple's fault).
All StarMax owners should immediately upgrade the ATA disk driver using
the latest Drive Setup 1.3.1. FWB is currently looking into the problem.

I recently upgraded from a PB-170 running System 7.0.1 and MacTCP/MacPPP to
a PB-3400 running OS8 with a short transition through OS 7.6. All seems to
work fine, although it took quite a while to figure out how to really use
OT for multiple configurations. I still have one anoying problem. I have
several different setups I use daily and have each defined. However, when
switching between them using Internet Dialer, the Internet Config field for
the browser home page gets cleared. Since I use a local page, I would like
it to always be the same, but it would not be unacceptable to set it once
for each TCP/PPP configuration - if I could figure out how to do it. I
would appreciate any suggestions as resetting it each time I switch (3-4
times per day) is painful. Thanks,

Check out Apple's Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) developer's kit. I
think the latest public version (1.5.1) has an SDK available that
includes the standard javac compiler. You can then write code in BBEdit
or even SimpleText and then compile it with javac and MRJ. Best of all,
it's free!
If you need access to the latest MRJ, I suggest joining the MRJ
Developers list. You also might want to poke around Apple's Java page
for some pointers to internal Apple and
external Java resources.
Hope this helps,

Subject: Musical composition software?
{Do not reply to the address from which I'm posting, oh helpful Mac-faithful,
that address doesn't accept email. It's an anti-spam thing. See signature
for correct address}
I'm visiting my folks' house and my Mom wanted to be able to write down the
notes that constitute the musical score that her choir wants to learn to
sing, then transpose it according to the vocal needs and ranges of the
singers. I told her she should do this on the Mac and sat down to the task
of re-familiarizing myself with the interface. I have Musicshop and the
shareware program MIDIgraphy on my Mac and figured between the two of them
would be an adequate solution. You know...new document, grab note value
(half, eighth, quarter, whatever), click on the proper position on the staff
to put that value there, go to the next note, etc., relying on the software
to count note values and put in the bar lines, simple stuff, right?
Well, MIDIgraphy doesn't have a classical music-staff interface for creating
new documents; and Musicshop, although it does, has a truly horrible
interface for the project (obviously their mind was on how to assign voices
to each track and how to speak to various different MIDI devices); I found to
my annoyance that although there were three different places in the overhead
toolbar from which I could choose a note value, the note actually created
would invariably be an eighth note no matter what I did. Wonderful.
(Version 1.0.2 in case you're wondering. I'm not feeling inspired to
upgrade).
No problem, I thought. I logged on, poked around a bit, and downloaded
Player Pro, Anthem, and a demo of Nightingale. All say they do musical
notation. Nightingale, I quickly learned, is designed so that you can't
print what you produce unless you are a registered user, and apparently the
part I'd downloaded wasn't complete in and of itself, so I put it off for
later. Anthem also landed incomplete, informing me that I needed the MIDI
Manager or the OMS thingie from Opcode, plus the Adobe Sonata font, just to
run it. Onward to Player Pro.
Cool, it gives me a classical interface. Cool, it deposits the desired note
value in the spot where I click! Uh oh, way uncool, it changes the note
value of notes I've already put down depending on the horizontal location of
where I click to put the next note!?? Hmm, gots little numbers along the
top. I practice clicking at the intervals most likely to agree with the
values I've already assigned the previous notes. Manage to put three
consecutive quarter notes in a 4/4 measure but can't get a fourth quarter
note in to save my life. No matter where I click the third quarter note
becomes something horrible like an eighth tied to a sixteenth followed by a
spattering of tied notes that cascade across into the next measure. Nasty.
Ditch Player Pro.
Go to Opcode site, grab the OMS thingie, picking the Lite version cuz I'm not
trying to control a MIDI device, QuickTime Musical Instruments will do fine.
Install, restart, launch Anthem, get messages that I shoud've grabbed the
full sized OMS package, more nasty messages about Sonata font, and finally
I'm in Anthem. No staff in sight, I guess they weren't kidding about the
Sonata font (Musicshop says that too but in Musicshop I did at least get a
staff and bitmapped versions of notes for my screen). Go to Adobe's site.
Looks like I gotta buy a CD-ROM from them to get the damn Sonata font.
Go back to MIDIgraphy, using the graphical interface, click to create notes
and drag to pitch positions (I like this interface), make a melody line.
Save doc. Open Musicshop, import the MIDI file. First measure is OK, with
4 quarter notes. Second measure begins with the assumption that I started
off with a sixteenth rest. Everything that follows is abominably syncopated,
impossible to sightread.
How the bloody hell do I find a no-bells and no-whistles music annotation
program? All I want to be able to do is click on the damn staff and say "You
are a quarter note. You are a C" and go to the next note, etc., until I have
a composition in place, and be able to save as a MIDI file. It doesn't have
to know from Yamahas and Casios, wave forms, timing synchronization
protocols, or digital sampling. It need not play with MODs, AIFFs, or
tinkertoys. Would be nice if it could import or open existing MIDI files.
Would be nice if it could print. Would be nice if it were free. Would be
nice if it were reasonably priced shareware if not free.

Subject: newton-mac communication issues (A)
I hope the following remarks will help this list see the
importance of communications issues to both mac and newton owners. For
example, I wish to market my newton aps to mac owners who might think of
buying a newton, but not think of it were they not to see discussion here.
Just because apple spun off newton doesn't mean Steve doesn't think the
mp2100 is dynomite. And how come the only stockholders in newton are apple
employees. I'd say newton discussion is relevant here and with to show it
below.
Dr. Adam O. Horvath, Faculty of Education and Department of Psychology
wrote : 1 I have tried to synchronise my PIM (Claris Organiser v2.0) on
my desk top macine with the Newton using Apple's new Newton Connection
Utilities...
I write :
Does this Newton Connection Utilities contain "works". I've done a
bit of export of newton works notes I quietly take in physics colloquia
(don't dare use a keyboard). Works sounds like claris works and allows
import to and export from various xtnd translated mac files.
Adam continues :
2 The Newton has a IR communication device built into it: What can it
communicate with?!
I write :
As far as I knew another newton. Steve Weyer wrote a seminal work
on endpoints which make a user layer which hides what it is finally
communicating through, serial, ir, or internet. I wish that I get the
nerve someday to make a two newton game! It would keep these two little
girls from fighting over one newton and make them play with each other.
He goes on :
Not a desktop Mac, Not a PB,
I write :
I use mp2000 works and newton press and paperback by David Fodor.
Paperback helped me meditate a long time on e mails. Now, Newton Press
enables me to optical character recognize books and read them with glowing
mp130 and mp2000 while I take long walks.
He writes : (I heard that it could control a Sony disk
player..but why? )
Having a free api for a disc player allows more control buttons
that fit on the disk player. Once upon a time in an apple operating
system, apple had buttons to control the seconds of starting and stopping
a cd track. I could use this to drill difficult passages in choral pieces.
Now, I can't. So, controling a cd sounds very interesting to me.
Attempt at Summary :
I use my newtons to carry reading around with me and to take notes
without making typing sounds.
I also like to learn object oriented application development which
I write on my mac and port into the newton with something that changed its
name from slurpee to sloop (I believe).
I have little tiny freeware programs to import sounds and picts
from the mac to the newton.
Newton press allows me to typeset latex documents, print them as
picts and then import them into newton press as pages. This keeps me
current in physics while taking delightful long walks without carrying a
powerbook. Check out my Albrecht101.
I think the newton is very relevant carriable for communicating
with macs.
Kindness in closing :
I appreciate Dr. Horvath's frustrations. I know that I might like
to keep names and appointments organized but if Claris Organiser and
Newton Connection Utilities crash and mess up to disorganize me, I would
be rather proud to notice them messing up. That is a serious flaw. I
recall having heard of an appointments program messing up in some place
near Washington D.C. and how they had to look for someone cleared to know
the schedual to fix it. So, I would suggest apple or newton get on the
bicycle with this. It could mean the government won't do a block buy of
these units. I suspect that these people are under great stress at end of
fiscal year and things will clear with the season.
I hope Dr. Horvath doesn't get discouraged prematurely with
newton, where instead he, like me, might instead find some great pleasure.

I have OmniPage 7 working here without problem (finally). I use a Quadra

If the PC Exchange control panel is active on your PowerMac, you should
be able to mount that ProDos disk by popping it into your floppy
drive--but it sounds like you’ve gotten that far.
Reading an AppleWorks file in ClarisWorks shouldn’t be any difficulty.
I haven’t installed v5.0 yet, but for a long time CW has had three
AppleWorks translators built right in. These are named AppleWorks,
AppleWorks DB/SS and AppleWorks GS. You should see them right at the
top of the System : Claris : Claris Translators folder.
What I don’t know is what versions of AppleWorks these translators
support. Near the end of its lifespan (actually, I wouldn’t be
surprised if it’s still being sold), AppleWorks was sold or licensed or
whatever to a third party, and versions 4 and 5 were not released by
Claris. For more help, check out the ClarisWorks mailing list, which
you can subscribe to at CLARIS-WORKS@LISTSERV.TEMPLE.EDU.
