Subject: [*] Create Eudora Folder 1.0 - multiple users
"Create Eudora Folder" is a script to facilitate setting up
Qualcomm's Eudora Light software to accommodate multiple users
and/or e-mail configurations on a single Mac OS computer. When
run, it prompts for a name, creates a new folder "name's Eudora
Folder" on the desktop, and launches Eudora so the user can
specify the desired settings. Once configured, the entire folder
can be moved to a more appropriate location, or copied to a
portable medium (such as a Zip cartridge) and used on multiple
computers.

Subject: [*] Funnel Web 1.0.6
Hi, I have uploaded the latest release of Funnel Web, 1.06.
Funnel Web is a demonstration version of a commercial web site profiling
and analysis program for the Macintosh. Funnel Web, can be used as either
a stand alone application or as a CGI. It provides detailed charting and
statistical analysis of any Web Server log file. It provides detailed
statistical analysis of server load and Web site usage and generates HTML
output files. One of the significant advantages of Funnel Web is its usability.
It has been carefully designed to allow ANY webmaster to generate
detailed web server statistics, and does not require any detailed knowledge of
log files or web servers. Unlike other programs it also supports any web
server log file from the Macintosh, Win95/NT and Unix.
Operates on any Macintosh running system 7 or greater.
cheers, Darren

I don't believe that such an upgrade is supported by Apple, but if you
spend much time wistfully around Macintosh showrooms you will observe
that many more recent Macs share the 5200's casework. The motherboard is
a sort of drawer that slides out the back of the machine. If you can get
a higher-end mobo from one of the more recent machines that uses the same
form factor, simply remove the two screws on the rear panel, pull down on
the two retaining tabs, and the panel will come off. Then tug *hard* on
the motherboard and it will come out. Transfer RAM and cache module
across to the new board and put it in!

Ecah time a message is forwarded, most emailers put a certain character, usually
'>' in front of the forwarded text. Most mailers allow you to change this
character. You omitted to mention which mailer you use, so I can't be any more
specific - except to say that obviously, you can set it to no character at all.
To get rid of existing '>'s in a message, use a text editor and use the replace
function to change '>'s to blanks. You will then need to put in some marks of
your own to make clear which is your reply and which is quoted from previous
replies, and who wrote which bit. Personally, I'd leave the '>>>'s in.
As a general rule, when quoting previous replies, it's best to only quote as
much as you need to to put your answer in context. Try not to let the quote be
longer than your answer, or you'll start to irritate people.

I have successfully used almost the exact same combination of hardware &
software, except that my 5200CD doesn't have an external hard disk. There
seem to be a few weird problems with the SCSI Zip, with even weirder
solutions.
First, download the latest version of Zip Tools from
, because any disk you received with the drive is
likely to be quite old. If that doesn't solve the problem, try swapping
the order of the devices (yes, I know it breaks the rule about slowest
first) and turn termination off on the HDD and on on the Zip.
If that still doesn't work, try disconnecting the external HDD. The
third-party driver on that disk may be interfering with Iomega's
utilities in some way. If that turns out to be the case, then you have a
problem - contact the driver vendor to see if it's a known conflict, they
may have a patch/update for it.

It strikes me that for most Internet users, it's a lot easier to set your
clock using the Network Time Protocol, so you're only a few hops away from
an atomic clock. No need to mess with a modem or calling a number - just
run Vremya or Network Time (both of which are in the HyperArchive). For

Subject: dead motherboard in PowerBook 170
Hi y'all,
I have (had?) a PowerBook 170. While testing what I ~thought~ was an
external 2.5" SCSI HD case, I burned out one of the power transistors on
the motherboard, an IRFR 9020. Oddly enough, the PowerBook ran for
another week before shutting itself down, never to start again. The
scorch marks are convincing, so I blame the transistor and not other
causes. (I didn't do anything taxing after that SCSI test failed and
let the magic stink out of the power transistor.) The transistor seems
to be irreplaceable, so I need a new motherboard. The daughtercard and
other internals like 6 MB memory should be fine. I'm having some
trouble finding a replacement 170 motherboard, but I've seen a few
PowerBook 145B motherboard available. The PowerBook 145B fits in the
same case, has the same ID on the ROM, and has the same 25 MHz data bus.
My FPU is on the daughtercard, so can I just put in a 145B motherboard
with all the rest of my 170 and have a PowerBook 170 again? Or is there
some hidden gotcha waiting to bite me?
TIA, Joni Julian

Subject: Disk Essentials (C)
Many of us have been looking forward to Total Recall's "Disk Essentials"
as at least an alternative to Norton Utilities, maybe even a superior one.
I got my copy of 1.1 this week, and I thought y'all might like to hear my
rantings about it. Or I just feel like ranting, and y'all are are a handy
audience.
Disk Essentials has four modules: A home base (Disk Essentials), a disk
fixer (DiskRX), a file recoverer (Data Recovery Toolkit), and a backup
program (StopLoss). You must install them all. The installer offers an
option to install only the parts you need, but if you look close, you'll
see that each custom install needs zero K. Goes very quickly and does
nothing. Install the whole thing. Even if, like me, you have no use for
StopLoss. I use Retrospect for backup, thank you very much. I don't want
or need StopLoss. I get StopLoss. Whoopie.
And Disk Essentials must be run in a four-module clump. That leaves out a
boot floppy. I put DiskRX on a Sys8 boot floppy. Plenty of space. It came
up saying that it must run from within the Disk Essentials home base. OK,
I added that. Not much space left on the boot floppy afterwards. The disk
booted, I got the DE "home page" menu, I selected DiskRX, it launched and
went off to search for drives, and it killed my computer.
I dropped a note to Total Recall based on my best reading of "feedback" on
its web page (www.recallusa.com). Got a note from support@recallusa.com that
said "I can't answer your question. Write to "diskessentials@recallusa.com."
OK, but why did the web site ask me to specify Disk Essentials before asking
for my feedback? I forwarded the note to the right place. And got stuffed.
We don't do it that way. And the license says you can only use it on one
machine, so why do you need a boot floppy? To address the latter first, if
the machine's hard drive goes Dixie, what do I do? Get the thing at least
visible with a Norton boot floppy? Then hope that the part of the HD that
went gaga didn't affect Disk Essentials so it can be invoked from a Disk
Tools floppy? Gimme a break. And for the litigious among us, if I had the
utility on a boot floppy, it is either on zero machines or on one. Total
Recall did not ask that I specify the serial number of the Mac. So what's
their problem?
We don't do it that way? Why the naughtyword not? Well we wanted to put DE
on a boot CD, but Apple wouldn't let us. Maybe because of Symantec? Ooooh!
Could this be Satan? Oh barf. Nothing about the three useful modules seems
to make them interdependent. Only Total Recall's marketing decision makes
it a condition of use that all four modules be on the boot disk.
Doesn't seem to be much magic. After I installed DE on my HD and personalized
it, I could copy the DE folder to one of my bootable M/O disks. Yes, it worked.
I expect I could copy a personalized DE folder to a CD-R disc. But how many of
us have a CD burner? Or an M/O drive? Or a ZIP drive?
This seems to be major ridiculous.
And that's just the mechanics. How about the utility?
I booted DE from an M/O drive. It found an error in my HD's catalog. It
fixed it. Then, just to be a perfect snot, I booted with a Norton 351
floppy. Guess what? Now let's not always see the same hands. Yup. HD catalog
error. Which Norton also fixed. Did Norton fix a fix? Did Norton fix something
that wasn't broken? Did DE break something it was fixing? Enquiring minds
want to know.
The Total Recall folk swear I'll be much happier with DE than with Norton.
Really? Why?

One of the things that Apple should do is provide is an online listing

So here are a few tips:
- upgrade at least to version 3.x of Quark. Version 2 is too old to have
its code optimized to work on PPC machines - and it's probably too old for
anything else. What do you expect to do with a so old program?
- problems you are experiencing with your text is *probably* due to a
corrupted font. Check out carefully each one.

You don't actually take the case off. All you do is remove the front
faceplate. To do that you need to press in on the 2 tabs on the bottom of
the faceplate. With those pressed in, you tilt the front panel upwards.
That will give you access to all the drives the 636CD holds. The HD is
behind a metal plate underneath the floppy drive. Just remove the screw,
unplug the IDE ribbon cable and pull carefully.
Of course once you put in the new HD, you'll want to boot the machine
before you put everything back together. Simply do the reverse to put it
back together.

If you get an AV card for your 6100 you'll be able to watch an suitable
video input be it from a TV, VCR, etc. You will not be able to tune a TV
or cable station in on your 6100 with the AV card. There's no tuner
built-in, only circuitry that allows you to receive a proper video
signal. So you could theoretically get a signal from your TV or cable box
and send it to your Mac and watch TV.
The TV Tuner card is a separate add-in card that Apple offered with some
of the PCI-based Macs and the Performa/LC 5xx/6xx/5xxx/6xxx-series
computers. It actually contained TV tuner circuitry and had a coaxial
input on the back so you could plug in your cable and tune it in on your
computer with no external help necessary. Unfortunately, I don't know of
any card like that which exists for NuBus-Macs anymore. There used to be
one called ComputerEyes, but I doubt it's in production any more.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Subject: Will an AV card enable me to watch TV ?
Without a TV Tuner card, you can still watch TV via that card but you need
a VCR or TV with composite video outs. It's kinda like a TV with PIP with
only one tuner. You would need to use the VCR to do the tuning, but you
would be able to watch it trough your 6100.

Subject: {Q}"Think Different" Commercial spoof
I recently saw a spoof on Apple's "Think Different" commercial, with qiuite
a different cast of characters than the original.
I was also that it can be found in quick time format on the net. Does
anyone know where to find it?
Thanks!
