HeartWood=81 (Release 3.0) is genealogy with a human face. HeartWood is a
program for both the serious researcher and the amateur family historian.
Graphically based, HeartWood can Add, Change, or Find information about
your family tree by the simple "click" of an Icon. The program will
actually draw your family tree for you! The program integrates the easy
display of precious family pictures with "thumbnail" photos directly on a
person's record. Unlike traditional programs that simply display names and
draw confusing lines among these names, HeartWood will draw a tree of icons
for easier understanding and more enjoyment. And with release 3.0's
addition of the unique "Family-Go-Round", enjoying and understanding
multiple generations of families has become even easier! Complete
documentation of all HeartWood capabilities is integrated into the online
Help features. HeartWood produces all traditional reports like Pedigree
Charts, Lineage Charts, etc. The program supports importing/ exporting of
data in both GEDCOM and simple text formats. Hardware requirements are a
PowerPC base Macintosh (or Clone) and 4 MB of memory. HeartWood is

Subject: (Q) AC adaptor on PB 5300c
I've had a PowerBook 5300c for about 2 years and recently have been having
problems getting the AC adaptor to work. I bought a new AC adaptor which
seemed to go bad quickly. It smoked and melted (it looked like it had been
bent slightly afterwards) while my husband was jiggling it around trying to
get it to work (I have since told him not to do this!).
We replaced the melted AC adaptor with yet another new one but still
continue to have problems getting the AC adaptor to make contact and
provide power continuously. The problem appears to be that contact isn't
being made but *not* because of broken wires in the adaptor (perhaps
because the jack on the back of the computer is bent, dirty or suffering
some sort of other problem).
My questions are:
1. Is this a "known" problem with the 5300 series (along with all the other
problems)?
2. Am I unlucky with the adaptors or do I need to replace the jack on the
back of the computer?
3. If I do need to replace it, does anyone have any idea what it's going to
cost?
4. Any quick, easy and cheap ways to fix this?
Any advice or comments would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Shari

Subject: 7200 Upgradability (Q)
Dear Digest,
Every Mac from the II until the 7200/75 was upgradable to at least the next
level of CPU power with a NuBus expansion card. Every Mac since the 7200
has been upgradable by a daughtercard expansion, and even the Blackbird
Powerbooks could be upgraded to PowerPC with a CPU swap. Now then why
haven't I seen in the "MacWorld" magazine or anywhere else a 604 PowerPC
upgrade for the 7200? It has 3 PCI slots, what makes it impossible to tell
the computer's motherboard to ignore the 601 CPU and to accept a 604 or
604e in the PCI slot? Why hasn't anyone made a CPU upgrade for the
7200/75? Is there something in the 7200 that makes it inherantly
none-upgradable? At the time I got the 7200, it would have cost an extra
$500 just to get a 7500 putting it out of my price range. Now that maybe
soon I'll be able to afford an upgrade I am wondering how and if any might
finally be possible.
Am I not alone in this anguish?
Sure I can add on Cache cards, but that is a very limited speed boost.
So I can max out my RAM at 256MB, but still it isn't the same as having a
CPU that will support VirtualPC with Windows 95, or BeOS, all of which
require at least a 603e processor. So someone please end this nightmare
by making an upgrade path for the 7200/75.
Motherboard swaps are too expensive.
Please respond to my e-mail address: abrody@vax.clarku.edu
concerning any info you might have on upgrades available.
Thank you.

Subject: [Q] Some features of 630 DOS/Compatible
I'm considering purchasing a LC/Performa 630 DOS/Compatible but I have some
questions about some features of that Macintosh and I wondered if someone
out there who knows more about that specific Mac than I do could provide me
with some more information.
Ok... the questions:
- IDE. I heard wild rumors about it eg. that 512 MB is the limit and that
you would need EIDE to access more and last but not least that if you are
spoiled with SCSI, IDE would be a disappointment.
Are any of these claims true or can I just pop in a 1GB hard disk when I
finally managed to scrape the money together for it? What type of IDE
(vanilla or Enhanced) does the LC 630 have? What do I have to keep an eye
on while using IDE, eg. incompatible software, special drivers?
- The PC Card contains a 486DX2@66Mhz (*shiver*) with 4 MB of RAM.
Rumors and fellow MacUsers in my immediate vicinity say that when using
this PC component there is a penalty on the overall system performance.
Myth or Fact? Also, are there things I have to keep in mind when using it?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated...

However, AutoClock also adjusts your Mac's internal clock automatically
whenever it's off by more than one second at startup--PLUS it does the
daylight savings time thing. This is pretty useful if 1) you're a mere
mortal and that's good enough accuracy for you (sheesh!), 2) you can't
seem to remember to use Vremya on a regular basis, and 3) DST causes
enough disruption in your life as it is. I also enjoy having my computer
do this sort of thing (i.e., stuff it can do better than I can) on its
own.
The problem with the X2 modem probably stems from incompatibility with
the slower 14.4k modem at the other end. One could try locking the modem
port to a slower rate, or forcing a slower rate via init string (way fun
in OT, fer shoor).

Well, I have a PowerBook 180 that my daughter took to school, and someone
crushed the electric box thing while it was in the protective carrying
case, and the box thing pressed on the screen and ruined it, and it would
cost $500 to replace it! So I have a PowerBook 180 motherboard and
everything else. In fact, the Powerbook runs fine when attached to another
monitor - it's really just the screen that was destroyed. Would a 180
motherboard fit into a 170??

I'd like to add my comments re: Disk Essentials.
I had no problems loading or using the Program. I did run into the "
---you must use Disk Essentials to run the associated programs----
caution.
Of interest is that you can't save your repaired files to the "disk you
are repairing" so I just launched AppDisk and saved it to that--No
problem.
I also experienced the Norton/Disk Essentials fix-a-fix.
Mine was a Volume Bit Map issue. I ran DE follo"wing each warm/ cold
start and each time got a "Volume Bit Map error to fix. Was it real or
not (I'd kinda vote for not).It did find a bunch of incorrectly dated
files which it fixed (all of these were Microsoft Internet Explorer
cache files).
Al failed to mention that DE comes with a separate floppy containing
Disk Express II v.2.21a. It's a nice little HD optimizing program. It
allows you to schedule regular file defrag's and optimizations.
What I liked most is that you can run it without quitting everythig and
starting up off of a CD/Floppy ala Norton. Just start a Ram Disk to save
files to during the repairs.
Cost is a little steep though. About $129. (as I recall)
With Apple coming out with a HFS+ Driver, will this NEW version of DE
work with it? I've got a call into RecallUSA. I'll keep ya posted.

Subject: LocalTalk Color StyleWriter 2500 problem
Dear person with knowledge:
I am usually the one who helps people to do this and that with their Mac
and this I have been doing faithfully for 12 years all the time.
Now I am suddenly in need of help:
I have a Color StyleWriter 2500 with an AppleTalk attachment so that I can
print over LocalTalk. I've used the attachment and not used it depending
upon whether I use StyleScript that I don't have for AppleTalk.
But since System 8, whenever I try to Choose the 2500 directly from the
Printer cable I am told that another application is using the port, after I
have first been told to switch AppleTalk off. No matter what I do, I am not
able to select the Printer port, it reverts back to Modem port.
So then in order to work around it, I attached the AppleTalk adapter and
thought I could try to print over the LocalTalk network.
But no matter how much I try, I cannot remember how I get the 2500 set up
as a network printer!
Can anyone help me?

Subject: old SE and an HP printer
I tried to help a lady tonight who had just bought an old SE from a former
client of mine. (In fact, we had to call him about some diskettes while I
was there, and he told me he had replaced the old Mac with a Pentium, and
it was a big mistake - the Pentium keeps doing what it isn't supposed to
and is driving him crazy). Anyway, she got herself a nice little Mac SE
running MacWrite, MacPaint and MacDraw, and attached to an HP DeskWriter
printer with no model number on it. It's OLD.
When she prints, she's getting jaggies. I installed all the fonts I could
find around using the Font/DA Mover, but I really can't remember much about
these old models. Do the printer fonts stay right in the System folder? She
was getting jaggies whatever she printed, though I brought home one of her
documents to my nice modern PowerMac and printed to my Laser Printer and
there were no jaggies at all. So I assume the problem is with the printer
or its driver. Did those old DeskWriters always make jaggies, or do I need
to find some special HP fonts to make it print better?
One other thing - whenever she tried to print using Geneva 12, Helvetica 12
or Times 12, we'd get this flashing empty error message window - the kind
that makes you restart the computer. I reinstalled her System 6.0.8 from a
newly-downloaded copy I brought her, but couldn't run Disk First Aid
because it wouldn't run. She also gets occasional "Address Error" messages,
so I assume that I need to erase and reformat her drive. She's busy backing
up to floppies.
I was unable to find a SCSI connector at the back of the computer. I wanted
to attach my Jaz drive. Did I miss it? Or did that model have no external
SCSI port?
Sorry for all the questions. I'd like to help her out, but I forgot too
much. Oh, one last thing. She has the HP printer driver version 2.2. Does
anyone know what is the latest version of HP DeskWriter printer driver that
would work on an SE running system 6.0.8? And if you do know, do you know
where I could get it? HP's site is way too modern for stuff like this.
Whew! Hope someone can help with some of this!

Subject: Problem displaying Floppy files under MacOS8
Hi there.
Since installing MacOS8 the other day, I've had a curious problem
viewing the contents of folders on some of my floppy disks. My
PowerMac 7300/166 64/2Gb will write to them happily, but
when it comes to displaying the contents of the folders it takes
way too long. And it only really seems to happen with .htm files,
but not .gif .jpg or .doc Word files.
Most of the stuff I use with floppies is PC formatted stuff, as I
use the disks to transfer web page documents to the PC's (yech!)
at my university. I thought the problem could be some kind of
incompatibility between PC Exchange and OS8, as it never happened before
whemn I was running 7.5.5 .
On some disks though, it will read and display them fine. On the duff
ones, it gives me the watch symbol while it tries to display
the icons, and I can't do anything else in the meantime.
Please can someone help me out via email direct,
Many thanks,
James.

Hi Folks:
The Mac community needs help with Quicken 98.
There is no way to contact Intuit about it on their Web page, and
calling their tech support is at our expense. Worst of all, though, is
the fact that major problems have existed since it’s release. We have no
way to know what, if anything, is going on.
The problems are that Quickfill Memorized Transactions and Memorized
Reports were deleted at conversion from Quicken 7. They cannot be
reestablished. For me in my business, those are major problems.
Quicken telephone support acknowledges the problems, but has no fix. The
web site doesn’t even acknowledge the problems.
We need both info from Intuit about progress, and a prompt updater to
fix the problems. Any help you can give would be great for lots of us.
