Special thanks go to Christoph Sahm for his work in localizing CacheSaver. Please place this alongside the English version already in the archives. About CacheSaver: Like many people, you've probably found that increasing the size of the disk cache in the Memory control panel can improve the performance of many applications, especially web browsers like Netscape Navigator. The disk cache speeds up disk input and output by keeping the contents of files in RAM, rather than immediately reading or writing them on the disk. The problem with using a large disk cache is that when you save information, the data may end up staying in the cache for quite a while before it really gets written to your hard disk. If your Mac crashes before the cache gets saved, your data is lost. CacheSaver addresses this problem by periodically saving (or "flushing") the disk cache, thus minimizing data loss should your Macintosh crash while you are working. You can set CacheSaver to flush the cache whenever your Mac is idle for more than a specific amount of time, or it can do it automatically at regular intervals. CacheSaver also provides a hotkey so you can flush the disk cache manually. In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are available at: This program may be included on the Info-Mac and Umich CD-ROMs. [Archived as /info-mac/cfg/cache-saver-102d.hqx; 185K] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Feb 1997 01:10:21 -0800 From: Michael.C.Tilstra-1@tc.umn.edu (Mike Tilstra) Subject: [*] Clp Convert 1.0 Clp Convert 1.0 By Mike Tilstra & TaDPoL Tech This application converts both picture and text clipping files to text files= and picture files. First find the hard drive icon and drag it to a visible part of the screen. 2. Insert a floppy and do the same thing. 3. Now create 2 empty folders and name them something that will remind you what they are for. 4. Move them to where the blank screen spot is. Now when you restart and/or insert a floppy the icons for the drive/floppy will be put in a visible part of the screen because the blank spot is already occupied. I'm not at home, so I can't refer to the OT/PPP dialogs, but basically you want to put your username and password in OT/PPP's main window, then get rid of the connection script [wait for this, type that, wait for another thing, type this other stuff, etc.] you are currently using. You may need to modify your login name slightly. For example, my PPP login username changed from "chaz" to "chaz.ppp"; when I added a static IP to my account, it became "Pchaz". The PAP authentication system uses the login name to determine the type of connection. If I want to go back to using a floating IP for some reason, I can just change my login name back to "chaz.ppp". If there is a checkbox in OT/PPP for "use PAP authentication" or somesuch, turn it on. I don't there is, however. Or could anyone >give directions on how I could write something like this with AppleScript? I have written such a script in about 10 minutes; it uses PPPop (found on info-mac) and Eudora. I saved it as "Check Mail" and put it in my "Speakable Items" folder. Now when I'm busy watching my kids taking their bath, I lean in the next room and say "Computer, check mail" and my Power Mac does just that! It's the coolest thing ever! Here's the script: tell application "Finder" open file "Eudora Settings" of folder "Eudora Folder" of folder "System" of startup disk --Just to open one of my many prefs files and start Eudora end tell tell application "PPPop F1.4.1" --F for french version activate connect end tell with timeout of 9999 seconds tell application "Eudora Light" activate connect with sending and checking end tell end timeout tell application "PPPop F1.4.1" activate disconnect quit --if you want end tell --Philippe ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Feb 1997 21:51:56 -0800 (PST) From: "Rob C." Subject: SCSI Video Input Peripheral? There must be some sort of a SCSI peripheral made for any Macintosh which translates input from video, (via AV jacks?) to be used by Quicktime or Photoshop as image files, through a SCSI or modem port (like MIDI translator II). True or False? I too would appreciate some insights!! Shouldn't the PB1400 be much faster than the Q650? Even with Speed Doubler 2.0.1 installed it is not much faster (although Speed Doubler certainly helps!). Dear Mac Wizards, I was wondering if the dust has settled on System 7.6 enough for someone to advise me of whether it is worth upgrading my ageing LC475 from System 7.1? My main concern is memory. My current system takes up just under 2MB with the extensions I use regularly loaded, leaving only 6MB for CodeWarrior which is not really sufficient. So I'm ideally looking to reduce the System memory requirement as much as possible. A few of the extensions I currently use (e.g. Be Heirarchic, drag and drop enabler, etc) will no longer be necessary with System 7.6. On the other hand, I would like to use Apple Guide, and possible Apple Script (although I've a feeling the latter does use a fair bit of memory). I don't use a network. I have seen System 7.5 take up as much as 4 MB, even on a 68K Mac, but have been assured that with similar extensions loaded, 7.5 takes up less space than 7.1. So, 68K users, how much memory does your System 7.6 use? What can I realisticly expect? Many thanks. I have one of their video switches in my stash at work. A coworker used it to share his NEC monitor between a IIci (with an adapter cable) and a 386 a couple years ago. Black Box has always been a solid company in my opinion. They have frequently been higher end than I was willing to pay for, but they were also willing to custom build a Mac cable for me at no premium for only wanting only a quantity of one. (There was a slight premium for the custom build, as one might imagine...). >Hi, > I am now blessed with two computers, a 90 MHz pentium (work got it) and a >StarMax 4200.
