Subject: (A) >>>'s
Ecah time a message is forwarded, most emailers put a certain character, usually
'>' in front of the forwarded text. Most mailers allow you to change this
character. You omitted to mention which mailer you use, so I can't be any more
specific - except to say that obviously, you can set it to no character at all.
To get rid of existing '>'s in a message, use a text editor and use the replace
function to change '>'s to blanks. You will then need to put in some marks of
your own to make clear which is your reply and which is quoted from previous
replies, and who wrote which bit. Personally, I'd leave the '>>>'s in.
As a general rule, when quoting previous replies, it's best to only quote as
much as you need to to put your answer in context. Try not to let the quote be
longer than your answer, or you'll start to irritate people.
Ian.

Norm,
If you use Eudora, you can forward mail without creating those symbols
by using "Redirect" rather than forward.
If you are receiving mail with the >>> in them, you can use any
word processor to search for a ">" and replace it with nothing. Doing this
with BBEdit Lite is extremely fast and easy. You would have to save the
mail as a text file and then do the BBEdit trick with it, I think, though
perhaps someone else knows a better way.

Subject: [Q] FREEZE at Shutdown - 7600/132
Dear Friendly Helpful Mac Community:
My previously reliable Power Mac 7600/132 has developed the annoying habit,
intermittent but frequent, of freezing when shutting down or restarting.
I have tried the usual conflict resolution techniques (inconclusive) and
have just reinstalled system 7.5.5 (conclusive: still freezing).
The freeze occurs after the shutdown command is invoked (either via menu or
power-key dialog), and all applications have quit, but before the Syquest
EZ-135 spins down. I have two disk drives installed: a 1.2 GB Quantum
Fireball_TM1280S (my startup disk) , and a 1 GB Seagate ST51080N. I have
tons of memory (80MB) and available disk space, low fragmentation, and no
disk errors. I've eliminated some of the usual culprits (After Dark for
example is NOT to blame this time) but I'm still having trouble pinning
this one down.
Hints? Tips? Detailed step-by-step solutions? All welcome at
Thanks a million,
Bob.

Hi fellows,
Just got hold of a used IIfx, which is in good condition albeight a little bit slow.
Anyone who knows about an 68040 or PPC card, that can be operated in the fx's PDS-slot, the processor's socket or the NuBus ?
Just speeding the oscillator to 20% or 25% does not seem to be worth the effort. Maybe, with an '040 I can even go for System 8.

The "hack" is called LocalTalk Bridge, a commercial software by Apple
itself. It's a control panel, you just install it on the machine
physically
connected to both networks (LocalTalk and EtherTalk) and every machine
appears as belonging to the same network: it's totally transparent, you
can't even tell which network medium is in use on a machine, apart from
speed (LocalTalk remains a bottleneck, obviously).

Subject: Help with old Norton Encrypt files
It has become *imperative* that I recover the data from approximately
100 old Norton Encrypt files, which were encrypted with the same
password, using the FasCrypt [Norton proprietary] method. I have done
some looking into the password scheme and am convinced that the keyspace
I need to search is reasonably small - if I can find the details of the
algorithm, I am secure about retrieving the data. So I think I have
three alternatives:
* Find someone who already knows the details of the algorithm
[paradise].
* Find a scripting-type program which I can put onto the Mac and have it
try passwords out of a list. [Something like, if this dialog box is up
then enter the next line in this file; stop when this dialog box comes
up. I'm not primarily a Mac user, so I'm not aware of how
easy/difficult this would be.]
* Learn Mac assembler and get a disassembler, and determine the details
of the algorithm from the machine code.
If anyone could help with any of these, including recommendations for
programs to use for #2 and #3, or has an idea which I haven't thought
of, I would be forever in your debt.
Thank you for your time,
Mike D.

Subject: Internet Dialer and Internet Config
I am experiencing some unusual problems with Internet Dialer and Internet
Config. With Mac OS 8, Internet Dialer expects there to be an Internet
Config for each Dialer Configuration. The Assistant apparently creates it
when the dialer config is established. However, there appears to be no way
to set the Web home page for these configurations. Hence, when I switch
between dialer configurations, the web home page gets reset to all blanks.
The assistants do not have any capability to add the data when they create
the internet configs and Internet Config itself only appears to update a
default configuration. Does anyone know how to update the other Internet
Config configurations?

I wish I had a solution, but I don't. I just have a "me too," in that I
experienced the same thing accessing files over ethernet from a Mac running
OS 8 connected to a Unix network, not NT. So this problem isn't limited to
NT. I will be very interested in hearing a solution. It does not, by the
way, do it all the time and now that you mention it, I only noticed it
after a couple of PCs running Windows NT were added to the (mostly Unix)
network.
