-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Greetings. Most of the recent mail about Tripwire problems has resolved around 3 kinds of problems: 1) Tripwire 1.2 doesn't compile on your OS, and there is no config file in the distribution for your OS. Unfortunately, we have not had the resources to update Tripwire in the last few years. Our best advice is to find a config file for a system that is "close" to yours, and modify it as needed. That, or donate a complete, working version of your system (including hardware) to the COAST Lab for us to use in developing a port for you! If the system you are having problems with is some variant of Linux, then we can be a little more helpful. We will be releasing a patch set in early summer 1997 that should fix most Linux installation problems. 2) The twdb_check.pl program now gives error messages when run. This is usually because you are running Perl 5 on your system, and twdb_check was written for Perl 4. The patch included below will update the file to Perl 5. 3) You can successfully build Tripwire, but the self-tests fail sometimes. This is caused by an interesting timing phenomenon: when we originally released Tripwire 1.2, the sequences to touch a file and then reread it always took more than the resolution of the file modification clock. Now, almost 3 years later, systems and disks are faster, and the clock times may not change as a result of a modification that happens quickly and sufficiently "close to" the check. The solution is to introduce an artificial delay. The enclosed set of patches changes the test scripts to include a forced "sleep". The tests take longer to complete, but they are less likely to falsly report a failure! (And remember that any file that you change to customize your version of Tripwire, including the 4 files affected by this patch, will show as changed when you run the self-test.) To apply this patch, remove the PGP signature, then pipe this through the "patch" program with the options "-cp". Alternatively, you can apply these by hand. - --spaf, 10/96, 4/97 *** tests/test.update.sh.old Wed Oct 2 17:55:55 1996 - --- tests/test.update.sh Wed Oct 2 17:56:52 1996 *************** *** 43,49 **** # build run() cat << 'EOF' > $MYRUN ! #sleep 1 # agh!
